FOKUS FESTIVAL
Screen from Barcelona has been invited to participate at FOKUS Video Art Festival 2012, the second edition of the festival initiated by Nikolaj Kunsthal in Copenhagen 2012.

On this ocasion SFB has curated a programme that reflects on the different modes and strategies of production. We believe that these are key issues of interest to artists, institutions and agents involved in the creative cultural field, enabling the collective discussion in the frame of FOKUS Festival. Furthermore, the selection will allow us to map out our network methodology and explain our premises as a platform and a festival.

On another hand and beyond the strand of production, the pieces also share affinities in that they all portray a series of heterotopias, in the sense described by M. Foucault: they explore landscapes and places which encapsulate an strong “other” imaginaries, different from what they appear to be, and are situated at the heart of society –be this symbolical, historical or physical- but constitute its margins, its limits. It is in a way an attempt to trace a spectral geography of histories blurred by official narratives, the suspended time of the prison, the remnants of the spectacle, and the dystopias of the metropolis

In a landscape where reality has long ceased to be seen without the presence of auxiliary instruments, which constructs at the same time its registration and setting it up as an archive, the experience does not conform directly in contact with the world but as a mediated doppelgänger. In this type of situation we should not forget that each of the disseminating and accumulating structures that support the architecture of the information is itself a technology with a built-in ideological organisational criteria, of inclusion and exclusion.

This project is built from reflections on creative reading with an active attitude regarding materials from libraries, archives, collections or found-materials establishing with a critical fascination some series of narrative itineraries that discover hidden relationships from the intra-history, the creation of fictions and the infraordinary to practice a critical reading of their architecture, an anarcheology of the structures of knowledge and the everyday-life as well as an analysis of structures of consciousness formation.

This research tries to present projects that blur the boundaries between the practice of curators, historians, researchers, cultural producers and artists. Thus, located in this area of indistinct borders, it essays a significant rearrangement of the cultural materials that restate the questions to be undertaken, as well as the focus of interest. In fact, all the participating artists are engaged to or from several disciplines: in addition to the context of art itself, speak of their work also located in editing, research, music creation, educational programmes, curating, organising events and reflecting on exhibition spaces.

These are works that start at the same time questioning both the analysis of content as the actual means of implementation and presentation: devices, methodologies, materials selection, editing, exhibition strategies or building space.

Artefact 2012 THE SOCIAL CONTRACT

The theme of this eleventh edition of Artefact is The Social Contract. That term has been used in political and philosophical theories since the 17th century, but still emerges regularly today, in interviews with politicians, political party programs and debates. Even the early adopters of the social contract theory, such as John Locke, Thomas Hobbes and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, used and interpreted the concept in different ways. The classic interpretation concerns the relation between the individual as a citizen and a political entity, in which the individual sacrifices part of his freedom and power in order for the state to offer safety and social and economic security to the citizen. But what is the position of the social contract in our current times of crisis in a globalized world?

One of the festival’s main questions is whether we can renegotiate or reform those ‘contracts’. Can we cancel them, rewrite them? The programme focuses on different forms of resistance and imagination. With exhibitions, performances, debates and meetings with international artists, we look for the position and alternatives for The Social Contract in our contemporary information and network society.

Irational is a loose grouping of international artists who came together around the server irational.org, founded by the British net artist Heath Bunting in 1996, going on to make decisive contribution to early net art from the mid-1990s onward. They include Daniel G. Andújar (ES), Rachel Baker (UK), Kayle Brandon (UK), Heath Bunting (UK), Minerva Cuevas (MX), Vahida Ramujkic (SR), Kate Rich (AU) en Marcus Valentine (UK).

With dry humor and minimal aesthetics, irational commented on the Internet hype of the mid-to-late 1990s, competing with the commercialization euphoria of the new market by developing its own pseudo-ventures. At that time, net art was very immediate, neither needing nor enjoying the safety of a mediating space or instance. This is why irational often hit upon humorless trademark attorneys, who wanted to keep irational from using brand names such as 7-11, American Express, Sainsburys and Tesco. If the early activities of irational during its “net phase” were dedicated to calling virtual boundaries into question, its members now experiment with interrogating and overcoming economic, political, and social boundaries in real space. The works in the exhibition will partially be selected on the basis of them being a commentary on, or a premonition of, the current financial and economical crisis.

The Wonderful World of irational.org is curated by Inke Arns (Hartware MedienKunstVerein), Jacob Lillemose and Heath Bunting. It’s a smaller version and an update of an exhibition they presented in HMKV in Dortmund in 2006 and that was later also shown in Glasgow and Novi Sad. The exhibiton will often be ‘activated’ by several irational members with live events and workshops.

| A political art project in the form of a multimedia installation, open database, and interactive laboratory

The project Postcapital Archive 1989–2001 by Spanish artist Daniel García Andújar centers on the profound changes that have occurred around the world on social, political, economic, and cultural levels. Key issues are the fall of the Berlin Wall and the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York. Here, Andújar examines developments after the collapse of the Wall not from the aspect of postcommunism, but postcapitalism. He is concerned with the question of how “Western” societies have changed without their former counterpart, communism, and what kinds of new walls were built through global politics after 1989 and 2001. The foundation of the project is a digital archive containing over 2,500 files the artist has gathered from the Internet over the course of the past decade.

| Ein politisches Kunstprojekt als multimediale Installation, offene Datenbank und interaktives Labor

Das Projekt Postcapital. Archive 1989–2001 des spanischen Künstlers Daniel García Andújar kreist um die tief greifenden Veränderungen, die sich in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten weltweit auf gesellschaftlicher, politischer, ökonomischer und kultureller Ebene ereignet haben und als deren Eckpunkte der Fall der Berliner Mauer sowie der Terroranschlag auf das World Trade Center am 11. September 2001 gelten. Dabei betrachtet Andújar die Entwicklungen nach dem Mauerfall nicht unter Aspekten des Postkommunismus, sondern des Postkapitalismus. Es geht ihm um die Frage, inwiefern sich die »westlichen« Gesellschaften ohne ihr ehemaliges Gegenstück – den Kommunismus – verändert haben und welche neuen Mauern durch die globale Politik nach 1989 und 2001 gezogen wurden. Das Projekt basiert auf einem digitalen Archiv mit über 2500 Dateien, die der Künstler in den letzten zehn Jahren aus dem Internet zusammengetragen hat.
