“Where is Now?” picks up at the archive as a repository for the present— a medial place where reality is not only stored and formatted in images and documents but also interpreted and configured anew through each individual access. Here, time itself becomes a malleable substance, the material of playful intervention and radical reinterpretation. From the perspective of different presents—from the nineteen-sixties through today—the films and videos in this program frustrate the linear progression of time.

Historical crises and turning points in particular, which still today determine the rhythm of our time calculations, are encountered by the works with skepticism. Their protagonists develop strategies for overcoming history—by proclaiming new beginnings, by inhabiting the permanent crisis of a precarious present, or by staging a retro-future against the backdrop of dated utopias. The works problematize the state of experience and perception as well as of agency and representation under archive conditions: in the images self-created by societies in order to ensure their presentness, in the ways in which embodied memory becomes manifest, and in the medial exploration of deviance and dissent. Abstract
Remixing—the use of existing works to create new works—is more than just a style of electronic music. Remixing rather characterizes a meta-method that is becoming increasingly pivotal to all cultural practices. While many avant-garde movements of the twentieth century were concerned with processes of authorship decentering, the universal medium of the networked computer at the dawn of the twenty-first century turned it into a mass phenomenon. Felix Stalder will be presenting an overview of the ramifications of this changeover, which links questions of media-related development with a reconceptualization of authorship and with legal, economic, and sociopolitical dynamics. Abstract
With the advent of the so-called information age, much seemed prone to vanish: the body, the space, the city, the book along with its institution, the library. But everything returns, and not only as visual metaphors on monitor surfaces. While the physical body has proved to be an equally ineluctable and refractory factor in technical thing ensembles, megacities—notably illustrated by media geography through their radiant diagrams and maps—have asserted themselves as spatial and economic centers of a globally networked media culture. And despite an increasing digitalization that includes historical text and image inventory, libraries have been experiencing an unexpected renaissance over the past years, as attested to by a series of spectacular newly erected libraries. Architekturdebatten nach dem Fall der Mauer

Abstract
Die so genannte „kritische“ Architektur (Criticality) entstand in den 1970er Jahren parallel aus der Ablehnung gegen Postmoderne und Spätmoderne als ein gedankliches Konstrukt, welches nach dem Scheitern architektonischer und gesellschaftlicher Utopien nach ‘68 innerhalb der herrschenden gesellschaftlichen Verhältnisse – Kapitalismus und Massenkonsumkultur – der Architektur einen Bereich als autonome Kunst sichern sollte. Schnell etablierten sich „kritische“ Merkmale wie post-funktionaler Formalismus, abstrakte Manipulation geometrischer Elemente, Zurschaustellung architektonischer Konventionen, eine Geringschätzung gegenüber traditionellen architektonischen Werten wie Ort, Materialität, Detail oder Konstruktion, etc. Dabei wurden die oft nur Papier oder Modell gebliebenen Projekte begleitet von schwer zu durchdringenden theoretischen Texten, welche durch Anleihen bei post-strukturalistischen Autoren den Anspruch auf eine Architektur der Dekomposition, Disjunktion, Transgression oder Dekonstruktion unterstrichen, oder wortreich von der Problematisierung, der Auflösung, der Verweigerung und dem Schweigen der Architektur sprachen. Abstract
In a dyadic political landscape on the Korean Peninsula, where the expression “border crosser” still belongs to the expletive category of words, the life of a “border crosser” is risky. Here there is only room for a protocapitalism or a protosocialism. While the demarcation line (cease-fire line) stretching across the middle of the peninsula could conceivably open up perspectives to third parties, the dyadic formulas of life and death, inclusion and exclusion, or even angel and devil continue to remain insurmountable. Dieser Vortrag untersucht die aktuelle westliche Bilderpolitik in Zeiten von Krieg und Terror und liest diese Visualisierungen unter anderem mit Ausführungen von Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault und Judith Butler.Spätestens seit den Terroranschlägen des 11. September und den anschließenden Kriegen ist die alte Frage danach, wie viel Gewalt und Gräuel medial zu sehen gegeben werden sollen, wieder hochaktuell. Ich richte meinen Blick auf massenmediale Darstellungen von Krieg und Gewalt der letzten zwei Jahrhunderte und diskutiere, wie mittels Bilderpolitiken trans/nationale Sicherheitsgemeinschaften konstruiert werden. Mich interessiert daran die Frage nach einer visuellen Verantwortung, die sich weder einer konservativen Zensur unterordnet, noch einer naiven Schaulust hingibt oder im neoliberalen „anything-goes“ verliert. Kapital und Kunst lassen sich weder als reine Gegensätze noch als Einheit begreifen. Es handelt sich um einander überlagernde Felder symbolischer Akkumulation. Diese Überlagerungen können als wechselseitige Zuspitzungen aufgefasst werden, in denen das eine Feld zum Inbegriff des anderen wird; sie können jedoch auch Bereiche definieren, in denen die Widersprüchlichkeiten und Ungereimtheiten beider Seiten sichtbar werden. Keiko Sei will talk about her experiences with border crossings through video tapes, the screening of these tapes, and about her collaboration with dissident groups, the Samizdat media people, artists, and writers in Eastern Europe during the communist period and after—as well as how this experience, research, and her video archive have been used in other still-totalitarian countries such as Burma. She will also screen tapes that have crossed borders many times, such as: Spartakiada, the Czechoslovakian communist mass game having taken place once every five years, the last May Day celebration in communist Czechoslovakia, a Hungarian Samizdat video, an election campaign video of the first presidential election in Romania, Hungarian live broadcasting of the Romanian Revolution, a Yugoslavian satire video on Tito, a documentation of the day when Emperor Hirohito died, and political reality TV in Thailand. Una parte creciente de los nuevos modos de producción, presentación y distribución del arte parece actuar desde los márgenes, desde el extrarradio: se acerca al discurso principal, pero no lo habita. ¿Podemos considerar voluntaria esta marginalidad? ¿O es producto del carácter aún irreductible de un centro que se resistiría a ser disuelto? Quizá el problema resida en nuestra aparente imposibilidad de pensar sin un canon de referencia, sin la existencia de ese “centro” discursivo. La presencia de propuestas es cada vez mayor y su capacidad para generar respuestas creativas se mostraría inagotable, pero su facultad para influir en públicos mayoritarios sigue siendo escasa y se sitúa en un lugar tangencial con respecto a los modos tradicionales de legitimación de las propuestas artísticas, corriendo con ello el riesgo de agotamiento. ¿Debemos reescribirnos eternamente en oposición a un centro?
