Descripción del Workshop

El objetivo del taller ‘La aprehensión de la realidad desde el archivo postcapital’ es forjar un diálogo entre los participantes que permita, desde la práctica artística, generar plataformas de reflexión en torno a nuevos procesos transformadores de nuestra realidad. Este taller pretende instruir a los asistentes en conceptos derivados de la introducción de nuevas tecnologías de información y comunicación, la irrupción de Internet y el uso extensivo de la informática y la electrónica en su práctica habitual.

Los modelos están en continua definición, afortunadamente las actuales tecnologías de información y comunicación, así como las consecuencias de la globalización, han generado un nuevo marco que está cambiando nuestra forma de ver y relacionarnos con el mundo que nos rodea. Estas transformaciones están poniendo en crisis los modelos de distribución y gestión cultural dominante. El espacio digital no surgió simplemente como un medio que permite la comunicación, también surgió como un nuevo teatro de todo tipo de operaciones.

El archivo postcapital El archivo postcapital es un proyecto multimedia que incluye más de 250.000 documentos recopilados por la red en más de una década (1989-2001) de trabajo creativo y que cuenta con publicaciones, piezas de vídeo, material de bibliotecas, audios e imágenes que giran en torno a los cambios en lo social,  político, económico y cultural en las últimas dos décadas.

¿Quién lo imparte?

Daniel García Andújar es un artista español multimedia nacido en Almoradí en el año 1966; en la actualidad vive en Barcelona. Su trabajo se encuentra enfocado al campo del videoarte y del net art y los comienzos de su trayectoria artística se sitúan a finales de los años ochenta.

La crítica ácida e irónica que cuestiona la sociedad de la información es uno de los componentes que normalmente presenta en sus producciones. La reflexión sobre el uso de la tecnología y la reutilización de ordenadores también suele aparecer en sus obras. Entre sus trabajos encontramos: Technologies to The People (TTTP), un proyecto que comienza en el año 1996. Daniel G. Andújar es además director de los proyectos en la red: e-Valencia.org, e-barcelona.org y art.net.dortmund.

Daniel García Andújar es uno de los miembros de irational.org, un colectivo formado por varios autores; además destaca su labor en la realización de conferencias y talleres en diferentes países.

Su NETescopio es un visor para escudriñar el arte de última generación
El museo de arte contemporáneo de Badajoz conserva en su archivo cibernético más de 80 obras de artistas que crean para la Red
NETescopio. Arte en la Red. El desarrollo de las técnicas digitales ha dado como resultado un nuevo tipo de cultura artística y también de nuevas preocupaciones museísticas para conservar y exhibir el resultado del trabajo de los artistas creadores en Internet. En lo que al Museo Extremeño Iberoamericano de Arte Contemporáneo (Meiac) de Badajoz se refiere, los resultados son visitables en su página web (www.meiac.es), a través de su NETescopio o visor de arte (http://netescopio.meiac.es), un archivo digital en el que se puede acceder a más de 80 obras que ofrece la institución. Una colección on line para los interesados en el arte de última generación.
La propia palabra NETescopio remite a otros aparatos científicos utilizados por el hombre a lo largo de la historia, como los microscopios o los telescopios, usados para investigar con nuevas tecnologías mundos hasta entonces desconocidos. Con el NETescopio se puede mirar una colección de arte moderno que es conservada y divulgada de manera acorde con los soportes en los que se realiza.
El compromiso del Meiac con este tipo de divulgación artística viene del año 2000, en el que el museo comenzó a mostrar sus colecciones por métodos digitales. Al año siguiente, el Meiac desarrolló como proyecto de participación en ARCO su teoría del Museo Inmaterial, que fue seguida en la sede del propio museo por la exposición ‘Metamorfosis’, a partir de la cual se comenzó la colección de obras en soporte electrónico.
Como consecuencia de ello, el Meiac cuenta en la actualidad con un archivo de obras nacidas de la cultura de red, arte de última generación para usuarios de los sistemas de comunicación del siglo XXI. Arte inmaterial. Se ha generado un nuevo tipo de productos artísticos, muy diferentes de las tradicionales pinturas o esculturas que han venido siendo acogidas por los museos. Y estos se esfuerzan en divulgarlos entre un público interesado en explorar todas las posibilidades de la Red.
Las sucesivas fases de este proyecto artístico del Meiac han sido comisariadas por Gustavo Romano, en cuyas manos recae el duro trabajo de aplicar los criterios del museo en este apartado y seleccionar las producciones que van a incorporarse a sus archivos.
De todas formas, en la página web del Meiac los artistas encuentran también la posibilidad de dirigirse a los responsables del museo para comunicarles la existencia de cualquier obra que crean pueda colmar sus apetencias. En cuanto al nuevo espectador que consume arte a través de la Red, encontrará en el NETescopio, como en los viejos catálogos, datos que le permitirán comprender el trabajo del artista, como su biografía y una sinopsis de la pieza.
Fases
Una primera fase del desarrollo de este proyecto digital fue la muestra ‘Desmontajes’ (21 de noviembre de 2008 a 28 de febrero de 2009) en la que el foco de exhibición se centró en las producciones surgidas en los primeros años en la red. Obras en su mayor parte experimentales que jugaban con la interactividad y el uso de navegadores alternativos y que fueron rápidamente enfrentadas a los nuevos modos surgidos de las emergentes redes sociales.
La segunda fase, ‘Reapropiaciones’, está en marcha desde el pasado mes de noviembre y terminará el 20 de marzo de 2010. Si en principio se trataba de descodificar nuevos caminos artísticos, con la «reapropiación» artística se intenta mezclar y encontrar nuevos significados a los contenidos digitales.
La tercera parte de este desarrollo artístico se llamará ‘Intrusiones’ y en este momento se procede a la selección de obras que se incorporarán a dicho proyecto a lo largo del 2010 y podrán ser visitadas, como siempre, a partir del otoño, en noviembre próximo. Aquí encontraremos proyectos que intervienen en espacios de uso común como la Wikipedia o Google Maps, que parodian o subvierten páginas de uso privado, o que invaden o se infiltran sigilosamente en el propio ordenador del usuario. También habrá propuestas individuales en las que el artista adopta un rol de espía o de intruso y propuestas grupales desarrolladas por colectivos artísticos o aquellas en las que se demanda la participación masiva del espectador.
Pero el Meiac también está interesado en proporcionar cierta «corporeidad» a esta parte de sus producciones para divulgarlas más y mejor y está organizando para este 2010 una exposición que se pretende hacer itinerante por distintos museos europeos, norteamericanos y de Iberoamérica. Los lugares en los que el Meiac piensa presentar su colección digital a partir de este año son el Centro Cultural de Sao Paulo, el Laboratorio Arte Alameda en el DF (México), el Centro Cultural de España en Buenos Aires, Calit2 de San Diego y el Chelsea Art Museum, de Nueva York.
Nuevos usos
El arte digital inaugura nuevos usos y costumbres en la relación entre los artistas y los museos. ¿Quién es el propietario de una obra que se divulga a través de la Red? ¿Cómo se preserva la integridad de la misma en medio de la batalla desatada por el control de las imágenes que circulan por el ciberespacio? El Meiac responde a esto que el carácter efímero de muchas de estas obras de arte requiere una estrategia nueva de conservación de las mismas que incluya una contextualización rigurosa. La obra concreta se rodea aquí de añadidos como entrevistas con el artista, fichas técnicas o análisis críticos que, en el caso improbable de su pérdida, permitieran una reconstrucción casi arqueológica de la misma.
El dominio sobre la obra también tiene sus peculiaridades. El Meiac exhibe las suyas a través de acuerdos con sus autores que no implican la cesión de la propiedad, sino que autorizan la incorporación al museo y su uso a cambio del compromiso de conservación de las mismas.

“后资本文献”的内容在这些展出得到了不断的完善与扩充，因为
这一多媒体项目不仅允许来自用户的咨询，内容上更是允许复制
甚至修改。
现行版本的“后资本文献”由超过25 万份文档组成，包括期
刊、视频音频片段、图片库等，它们都是丹尼埃尔· G · 安杜哈在
将近10 年的创作过程中从互联网上收集的。这些丰富的多媒体资
料描绘了从柏林墙倒塌至纽约“9 · 11”事件期间，地缘政治、共
产主义和资本主义意识形态的转变。
“后资本文献1989-2001”发展至今，已经有了不同规模的各
类作品项目，此次北京伊比利亚当代艺术中心将要展出其中的一
部分。展览分为各自对立的两大主题：第一，总结1989 至2001
年间，历年产生的媒体图象与意识形态八股；第二个主题则关注
文献本身的内容，介绍为了将认识分类而使用的排序、汇编及表
现结构。在第一个主题中，主观上的编年表是一条由许多照片组
成的“时间轴”，这些照片有来自“媒体”的，也有来自广告宣传的，
它们从相互矛盾对立的角度描绘出后资本主义时期发生的众多政
治事件。一则南非杂志的宣传广告是“世界会在一天内改变”，该
杂志使用了两张照片，分别作为首尾，一张是1989 年11 月8 日
的柏林墙，另一张是2001 年9 月11 日的世界贸易中心，这使得
杂志广告成为一种可视的日记形式。抽象拼贴视频《越界》向我
们展现出越界的不同方式，柏林墙上的一跃、在边境城市休达和
戈梅拉的中转，同样在政治八股这一问题上。最后，以下作品尤
其值得关注：纪念伊拉克战争的作品《荣耀》，这组作品汇编了新
闻材料、动画游戏和美国煤矿工人业余拍摄的电影片段；记录册
《不要战争》，完整地记录了2003 年爆发的反对美国向伊拉克宣战
的群众示威游行；以及《9 月11 日的秘密》，该作品对比了2001
年9 月11 日星期二，纽约世界贸易中心原址倒塌后的民众恐慌与
1973 年9 月11 日星期二，智利陆军总司令皮诺切特发动军事政
变后的政治混乱局面。
值得一提的是，在将文献中的认知分类上，此类综合反思已
成为“后资本文献1989-2001”的一种标志。两块镶板上分别展
示了重要国际企业的商标与全球范围内左派组织的名字，以此对
照了资本主义和共产主义、市场和意识形态。在这样的语义范畴内，
文献的中心思想在于，它是一台汇编了所有材料的服务器，用户
不仅能复制资料，更能修改这些资料的汇编结构。最后作为某种
意义上的补充，文献还有两个计划：通过为数众多的地图集、图表、
制图，以及新兴大城市、城市扩展的照片来诠释社会、政治、经
济方面的变化；另一个是“后资本书店”，两百多名艺术家的文字、
视频及其他文档资料，阵容可谓是一套后资本真经。

C&I: 正如瓦伦丁· 洛马在策展人文章中提到的，互联网已经
成为社会民主进程的一部分，这一点在中国也表现得尤为突出；“人
类技术”（TTTP）的产生更像一个寓言的图式，它一方面利用科
技和市场，而一方面又对其进行批判并对其保持警惕。
丹尼埃尔· G · 安杜哈：1996 年的时候， 我在网上注册
了一个虚拟的公司叫iSAM，这个公司的全称是Street Access
Machine by Technologies to The People。这个想法是源于一句广
告词:technology set us free（科技让我们自由）。我们开发了一个
系统，包括阅读器，特别信用卡以及公共在线门户。这个系统允
许包括流浪汉和边缘人群在内的人群进入到信用卡操作和电子商
务的世界中。实际上Street Access Machine 是苹果电脑1996 年
开发的和设计的一套系统软件，它注册了商标也因此受到商标保
护。但是能用上这套系统的人非常之少，一方面因为人们对它所
知甚少，一方面是因为你需要花钱去购买它。因此我们希望把这
套系统用于去连接那些它原本不可能连接到的人群，让这些人群
了解如何去使用这个系统。
很多时候人们并不知道如何去使用公共空间，那些公共空间
本身也暗含了许多规则，比如我父母的时代他们经常听广播，看
电视，但是他们很少会去想广播和电视后面的事情。是谁在使用
这些广播和电视？现在我们经常上youtube 这样的视频网站，并
认为那里很民主，可是事实是有很多的群体还并不知道youtube
为何物，更不知道如何使用它。包括我去非洲考察的时候会发现
大多数非洲人还不知道Facebook 是什么，这些人群依然游离于新
的科技和系统之外，他们或是因为不允许进入, 像北朝鲜，或是因
为对它的排斥。
C&I: 这样一种基于新技术的展览，包括文档，图片，网络信
息等等，它与一般传统的罗列艺术品的展览非常不同，那么作为
策展人，你如何去考虑这些作品与空间，与观众的关系？你如何
去呈现它？
瓦伦丁· 洛马：我跟丹尼尔的基本想法是为当地市民开放一个
新的科技平台，让他们尽可能近距离的，更多地了解正在发生的
科技的改变。如何去面对一种作为民主的科技，这是我首先想要
做的。比如很多观众他们可能都使用过ebay 网，但他们却没有意
识到ebay 网已经改变了他们的购物，交易方式。信息的输出是非
常重要的，我们希望所有的观众都能成为user( 使用者)，而不是
局外人（outsider）。进一步来说，我们希望呈现给观众一种现象，
那就是科技，网络已经成为我们社会的每日景观了，因此每个生
活其中的人都必须具备编码能力。而作为艺术家和策展人来说，
这种技术和网络业将成为我们新的，最切身的艺术实践，它是一
种不断地重复书写。我们必须像运用某种工具那样去运用艺术，
所有的图像，文档，网站都只是工具，帮助我们去认识现实（reality）。
策展人并不是阐释者，策展人永远是第二位的，策展人的功
能某种意义上是秘密的。他始终在对话中，与艺术家对话，与作
品对话，与观众对话。我并不喜欢现在梯级的策展人体系，策展
人应该始终处于对话的状态。不是我们告诉了观众什么而是观众
告诉了我们什么。

C&I: 你如何去定义“后资本”？“后资本”与“后殖民”在
你看来有什么不同的含义?
丹尼埃尔· G · 安杜哈：我认为后资本更多时候涉及的是一种
消费观念，是一种消费形态的改变。以前我们会跑很多的地方，
找很多家商店去买影碟，CD，但是现在我们已经不需要去支付这
样的钱了，而且我们已经不相信在正规商店出售的这些影像制品
了，它们大都经过删减，加工，通过了所谓的审核体系，它已经
不纯粹了。如今人们更愿意上youtube 或者其他视频网站去看更
直接的东西。后资本是对所有资本的产物的怀疑和不信任，它质
疑资本运作中的那些隐藏的权力关系。比如资本对信息的控制。
比如美国的微软公司，它掌握和控制了关于微软软件的秘密，因
此全世界1/3 的人都必须使用微软，他们都必须花钱去购买微软
的软件。进而，美国也在一定程度上控制了全世界的经济和政治。
而且很多信息和软件具有梯级系统，每一层都需要特殊的许可证。
后殖民更多的是一种政治观念，许多关心后殖民状况理论家，艺
术家和策展人大都来自有过被殖民历史的地区，国家。我觉得后
殖民跟我的关系不大，我也不太能感受那种殖民或被殖民的感觉，
虽然在西班牙的地理课上老师也会说西班牙是欧洲的中心，欧洲
的全球开拓是从西班牙开始的。我觉得后殖民是东方和西方之间
的，民主社会与非民主社会之间的问题，而后资本是民主社会内
部的问题。我更愿意说我们是在后资本的时代，这个时代中有版
权，有信息的控制，这其实跟2000 年前没什么区别。但是从技术
的层面上说我们的时代的确是一个全新的时代，即便是20 世纪和
21 世纪二者间的鸿沟都比我们想象的巨大。技术的变更，飞快地
改变着我们。每一代人使用的技术差别是如此之大，他们之间相
互不理解，更不说那些决策者和我们之间。现有的政治决策者跟
我们之间的年龄差距通常都会有20 岁－ 30 岁，我完全不相信他
们真正知道我们想要什么，我们在想什么。
C&I:“后资本”是一个不断移动的项目，其内容不断更改，增加，
被讨论，巡回到全球不同的城市，带有强烈的地区文化及社会色彩。
在这些巡回展中，当地观众的反应如何？对每一地区的展览的设
想是否会优先考虑当地的社会文化处境？尤其是在中国的展出？
丹尼埃尔·G·安杜哈：我其实觉得全世界的观众其实大同小异。
人们都对新技术感到好奇，都对文献很感兴趣，觉得那是他们的
真实生活，甚至是他们亲身经历过的。这些文献不是传统意义上
的文献，它们既有实物，图像，文本，又有电子，网络。它们不
是一种概念的谱系，不是被某个权力机构拥有并独自享用的东西。
它的使用权和所有权归所有人，并向所有人敞开。我们甚至可以
不用上图书馆去查阅，事实上我们就住在这些文献中。眼下全世
界的教育都一样，无聊和死板，只是非常机械地传授给你信息。
但是我们现在不需要被传授信息，google 和维基百科（Wikipedia）
可以提供所有我们想要获得的知识。现代人需要被传授的是掌握
知识的方法，而学会运用现代技术，网络是这种方法中最重要的。
现代社会的文盲不是缺乏知识而是不懂得运用技术。就像我刚才
说的，我希望我的观众都能成为使用者（user），我们的项目是使
得所有人都有权掌握他想掌握的信息。
C&I:“后资本文献1989—2001”，这段时期是全球政治变化
最为激烈的时间，其中相当多的事件成为了20 至21 世纪社会变
革的重要分水岭，您作为艺术家是如何来对这其中信息做出调整
和判断的呢？
丹尼埃尔· G · 安杜哈：我觉得我所充当的，更多是一种编辑
（editor）的角色。这也是我一直坚持的一种观点就是，我们不能只
看图像，要看到图像背后的真实。图像以及任何一种艺术形态都
只是我们认知的工具。我更愿意把我的工作看作是一种知识的再
生产。确实，在一段时期世界政治发生了重大的变化，比如1989
年因特网从原来的军用转向民用，同年美国入侵巴拿马，柏林墙
倒塌。所以这是非常敏感的一年，有些是原有的旧的障碍被打破，
拆除，有些则是新的障碍正在被建立。2001 年是大家都知道的9.11
事件，这在我看来是非常的重要的事件，在这当中有些东西，比
如美国总是很引以为豪的自由民主梦的倒塌；有些东西又开始被
建立，比如北京的奥委组委会是2001 年建立的，这对中国来说也
是非常具有历史意义的事情。

What is the term “mediating conflict” if not redundant, since mediation itself implies the existence of conflict? And why would anyone create and organize an exhibition on the subject?

This exhibition is intended as a reflection on the need for access to a middleman to resolve conflicts—latent or declared—in society in general, but also in the contemporary art world. With La mediation du conflit/Mediating Conflict, I hope to delve deeper, into the reasons why disagreements are rarely resolved, particularly in the sphere of art—a sphere where these quarrels often lead to frustration among “those who feel they are not being heard.” The exhibition aims to prompt questioning about the meaning of mediation and its intrinsic conflict, whose dark underside we seem so fearful to confront in the art world. If the exhibition title therefore seems redundant, given that mediation by definition incorporates the notion of conflict, it is so worded to ensure it is not simply implicit but is in fact emphasized. Its purpose is to stand in stark contrast to certain opaque discussions on art in which only the players intimately involved can fully grasp the issues. Those outside contemporary art circles frequently find themselves ill-equipped to understand the finer points of a work or exhibition. It is often out of this implicit doxa savante(1) that the conflicts emerge, and should they then become highly charged and unrestrained, efforts are made to silence them at all costs lest they tarnish art’s image. Why should conflict within the art milieu generate such alarm? After all, conflict already permeates our day-to-day existence. It is present in our personal and professional lives, and in foreign relations and the political arena, conflict is fast becoming the order of the day.

I must admit that I was somewhat skeptical when, in 2006, Joanne Germain, head of the Maison de la culture Plateau-Mont-Royal, asked me to curate an exhibition based on my work La mediation de l’art contemporain (The Mediation of Contemporary Art). After 10 years of reflecting, discussing and writing on this thorny question, I could not imagine mounting an exhibition on the subject without falling into the didactic trap, or worse, that of the opacity I so criticized. But Joanne was insistent, and the idea grew. Prior to and following the publication of my work, I had the opportunity to sit on various research committees and participate in meetings on these very issues. I have also had the pleasure of meeting many generous readers of my book, who have shared with me their points of view on the question. It is largely due to these influences that my reflections have evolved and the exhibition initiative has taken shape over the past two years.

However, the real impetus came in Seoul last fall during a conference I attended on the documentation and conservation of the media arts.There, I met many passionate individuals, including German curators Hans D. Christ and Iris Dressler. For these co-directors of the Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart, mediation is far removed from the hollow term or buzzword it seems too often to have become.(2) Instead, mediation stems from a practice inexorably linked to the creation of contemporary art exhibitions. Mediation is therefore no pastiche, like some spin-off activity tacked onto the end of an exhibition, but is rather a philosophy inherent to the project and essential to its very creation. Spanish artist Daniel García Andújar, another lecturer at the Seoul symposium, spoke with audience members of Postcapital, a project created by the irrational collective, of which Andújar is a founding member. The Postcapital exhibition represents the very incarnation of contemporary art mediation integrated into the heart of an artistic project. It examines difficult subjects (war, global terrorism, the rise of religious fundamentalisms, the loss of freedom of expression, etc.) and complex issues and is always presented without compromise.(3) I quickly realized that the die had been cast and the cornerstone of La médiation du conflit/Mediating Conflict, established.

the artists

The artists in this exhibition make use of technology and explore the notion of conflict and confrontation, both in the public and private arenas. These arenas are much more closely aligned to one another than we think, in much the same way that religious issues, which not so long ago were still considered highly personal,(4) have recently re-entered the public domain.
4. Applicable to societies became secular following the French Revolution (and the Quiet Revolution in Quebec), which advocated the separation of Church and State.

Daniel García Andújar (Barcelona, Spain), who works under the banner of technologies to the people, defines himself as a militant and “hacktivist.” He strives to alert the public of the dangers posed by technology when it is manipulated by information communication consortiums, often unbeknownst to the public. But Andújar also claims that “access to the technologies is a human right.” Andújar’s works confront us with the issues and pitfalls that come with the overuse and over-consumption of technology in our day-to-day lives, notably video games. His installation Honor provides a gripping and indeed dizzying view of these traps. In it, the artist samples the virtual “points of view” of video games set in global world conflicts with actual views of the same battles being fought in these relentless and incomprehensible wars, all uploaded from the web. It sounds the alert about the ruses that technology may hold in store for us. Andújar is also concerned by the loss of freedom of expression since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, a loss exacerbated by the terrorist acts of September 11, 2001. These events opened the door to the religious wars of the 21st century, increasingly giving way to theocracies in both the Near East and the United States and even resonating here in Quebec, where they reared their heads during hearings held by the Commission on Reasonable Accommodation in the fall 2007.

Andújar has exhibited his works in many countries in Europe and Latin America and is making his second foray into North America.

Marie-Christiane Mathieu (Montreal) immediately accepted the invitation to participate in La mediation du conflit/Mediating Conflict. She had been working on a project on this very theme, which she has since finished specifically for the exhibition. Parasite is an interactive sound installation that illustrates the many “shifts and drifts” that create the misunderstandings or miscommunications experienced every day by individuals and groups both in public and private. The artist states that in our search for truth, we often put up smokescreens to create confusion and achieve our ultimate goal, which is to take control, be it on a personal or public level.

Mathieu is an accomplished interdisciplinary artist. She has worked in animated film and holography and has produced an ambitious online work, Le monument du vide. She was the director of Studio XX and also produced public artworks under the Politique d’intégration des arts à l’architecture et à l’environnement(5) of the Quebec Ministry of Culture, Communications and the Status of Women.

Caroline Seck Langill (Peterborough, Ont.), artist, author, researcher, teacher and experienced curator, completes the exhibition triangle. Her project, never before presented to the public, is a video installation comprised of two videographs entitled act three and Firce. The work is based on the third act of The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekhov. It includes two scenes, one of which presents a modern interpretation of a family conflict, notably provoked by the loss of ancestral land returned to “strangers” (formerly serfs on the estate) at the dawn of the Russian Revolution. act three offers a dramatic 20-minute story, with Chekhov’s characters appearing as ghosts in an ultra-modern décor. The second monitor broadcasts a short video in a loop that emulates how this scene from the third act of The Cherry Orchard might have been staged at the Moscow Art Theatre in 1904. These seemingly remote, parallel worlds are brought together through their common subject and powerful dialogue despite the more than 100 years separating them: variations on the theme of loss against a backdrop of conflict.

conclusion to conflict

Let’s return to this notion of conflict. While conducting research for my Ph.D., I was often met with closed doors. The people behind these doors, as mentioned above, were part of certain contemporary art circles where it is felt there is no need to build closer ties between art and the general public by providing the keys or codes that foster a better understanding of the significance of artworks. I was told many times that there was no problem, and that in any case, “contemporary art is simply not intended for everyone.” At the other end of the spectrum, another obstacle just as formidable and insidious is infiltrating public discourse (doxa ordinaire), urged along by the mass media and detractors of contemporary art: public opinion. Also limiting the reach of art, it is often based on rumours, ignorance, or sensationalized information that is unfounded or presented out of context. Buoyed by these “false friends,” denigrators of contemporary art declare that there is no place in society for such forms of expression.(6) What results is a conflict between two diametrically opposed visions engaged in a dialogue of the deaf and refusing to debate the very subject that examines the problems associated with contemporary life. The paradox and conflict are further accentuated when one considers that contemporary art has never been more popular among the financial elite and the “jet set.” Its prominence is growing exponentially on the highly lucrative international art market, with it often representing a more solid investment than the stock market. We hear about certain works being appraised at astronomical prices, with their status soaring equally high among buyers and collectors within very select circles. This irrefutable fact only serves to drive an even larger wedge between art and the general public (seldom aware of these dealings) in a domain that has become too abstract for the average citizen.

In Quebec, we have recently been witness to two controversies that have enraged the public over public artworks: that of Martin Bureau, Kwebec 1759 – 2009/ Quart de piasse, censured in Summer 2008 by the foundry charged with casting all of the works in the project Folie/Culture, and Latitude 51° 27’ 50” – Longitude 57° 16’ 12” by Pierre Bourgault, following its installation in fall 2007 on the Promenade Samuel de Champlain in Quebec City.

Yet, despite these drawbacks, it is reassuring to know that we have undoubtedly a greater ability to analyze and decipher a contemporary work of art(7) than a 13th century altarpiece, whose symbols and iconographic codes can only be recognized and understood by religious art experts who specialize in this period in art history.

La mediation du conflit/Mediating Conflict is an attempt to expose the conflict, wherever it occurs, and above all an invitation to resolve it, while drawing a certain amount of pleasure from the effort.

De nos jours, le champ visuel est étroitement associé au territoire contemporain de la culture numérique  : divertissements numériques, publicité… Les artistes ne sont dorénavant plus les seuls capables d’influencer l’imaginaire visuel. Je pense d’ailleurs que nous avons perdu un peu de cette capacité et qu’il est peut-être temps d’arrêter de faire tant de bruit, de produire des images. Cela ne veut pas nécessairement dire cesser de travailler avec des images, ce que nous – artistes – savons bien faire, ou à tout le moins devrions-nous le savoir. Engageons-nous dans cette bataille, mais sachons également apprécier d’autres points de vue. Il importe de découvrir ce qui se cache derrière ces images; en fait, il importe d’enseigner aux gens comment les décoder, de les aider à déchiffrer le code des structures visuelles ; de montrer les antécédents ou l’étayage de toutes ces images; en bref, d’exposer leurs entrailles. Les images constituent un langage riche de potentiel, mais un potentiel engagé dans un combat : qui le contrôle ? Le langage transforme le monde. Voici l’un de nos principaux champs de bataille – posture intellectuelle ? Je ne sais pas. Mais on y travaille.

Honor fait partie des Archives post-capitalistes et, dans cette œuvre, je recycle des échantillons vidéo tirés d’Internet. Ces échantillons proviennent d’enregistrements amateurs réalisés par des combattants actifs sur les points chauds de la guerre globale, aussi bien que de la panoplie de jeux de guerre disponibles sur le marché, qui sont ensuite téléchargés sur Internet. Cette vidéo offre une image décourageante de la similitude croissante entre les imaginations réelles et l’imaginaire virtuel au sein de notre monde.

Les Archives post-capitalistes (1989–2001) se présentent comme un projet multimédia. Elles comprennent plus de 250 000 documents compilés grâce à Internet, couvrant une décennie de travail créatif et disséminés dans des publications, des extraits vidéo, de la documentation et des banques d’images et de sons.

Dans la foulée de la chute du mur de Berlin et de l’effondrement du bloc communiste, les pays d’Europe de l’Est ont connu une phase dite « post-communiste ». Dans un laps de temps d’à peine dix ans, cette transformation aux multiples visages – quelquefois pacifique, d’autres fois violente (comme dans les pays de l’ancienne Yougoslavie) – est devenue le centre d’intérêt de différents programmes et champs d’études, entraînant diagnostics, théories, mises en garde et critiques. Elle a été saluée par des analystes aussi différents que Ralf Dahrendorf(1) et Slavoj Žižek(2), Timothy Garton Ash(3) et Grzegorz Ekiert(4), Vesna Pusić(5) et Tibor Papp(6), John Le Carré(7) et Fredric Jameson(8), Antonio Negri(9) et Michael Hardt(10), etc.

Au moyen d’un train de mesures d’urgence – version postmoderne et insuffisante de l’ancien Plan Marshall élaboré pour l’Europe à la suite de la Seconde Guerre mondiale –, l’Occident a dicté une série de recettes économiques, politiques et doctrinales dans l’espoir d’instaurer les conditions d’une économie de marché libre dans les anciens territoires communistes. Que ce soit à l’aide d’une thérapie de choc, comme en Russie, ou par des programmes plus modérés, les efforts de l’Ouest visaient la conversion des pays communistes au capitalisme et à la libre entreprise. Cette manœuvre s’accorde avec les lois fondamentales de la démocratie libérale et la redéfinition des relations internationales inhérentes à cette démocratie (la vie soumise aux diktats du Fonds monétaire international, passage obligé pour faire partie de l’Union européenne et devenir membre de l’OTAN, etc.).

À peine deux décennies plus tard (dix-neuf ans pour être précis), et malgré les théories portant sur la fin de l’histoire prévoyant pour le capitalisme une éternité calme et insipide, on voit que l’Occident s’engage dans une série de changements dont on commence seulement à prendre connaissance de l’ampleur. De la droite comme de la gauche, de Robert Kaplan à l’avant-dernier recyclage de Francis Fukuyama(12), tout autant que chez Ulrich Beck(13) et Oskar Lafontaine(14), la croyance en un ordre mondial reposant sur des fondations sûres a commencé à exploser de la façon la plus inquiétante qui soit.

Privés de notre partenaire de danse de l’ère moderne (le socialisme), nous avons commencé à découvrir un libéralisme de plus en plus orthodoxe, de moins en moins démocratique. L’ancien écart sécuritaire entre l’Ouest et l’Est a fait place à une confrontation entre l’Occident et le monde arabe, entre le christianisme et l’islam, entre la démocratie et le terrorisme. Et ces confrontations ont fait surgir une nouvelle carte géopolitique dont les débuts peuvent être situés, chronologiquement, au moment des attaques du 11 septembre 2001 aux États-Unis.

Résumons cela en une phrase : le mur de Berlin s’est aussi effondré sur l’Occident. Et des termes quasi sacrés tels que « solidarité » et « transparence », après avoir joué un rôle déterminant dans l’abolition de gouvernements et de frontières dans les anciens pays de l’empire communiste, ont été enterrés sous les décombres des vieux murs et dans les fondations des nouveaux murs érigés par les politiques mondiales récentes. Nous qualifions cette situation de « post-capitaliste ».

Anna Kournikova Deleted By Memeright Trusted System – Art in the Age of Intellectual Property

‘You can’t use it without my permission … I’m gonna sue your ass!’ shouts Disney’s Little Mermaid with the angry voice of a copyright lawyer in the video Gimme the Mermaid (4:49 min., 2000).

The video by Negativland and Tim Maloney, situated at the exhibition entrance, is one of twenty eight works included in ‘Anna Kournikova Deleted By Memeright Trusted System – Art in the Age of Intellectual Property’, an exhibition presented by Hartware MedienKunstVerein (HMKV). It is part of the project “Work 2.0 – Copyright and Creative Work in the Digital Age”. In the framework of “Work 2.0″, HMKV – together with the Berlin-based collaborative partner iRights.info/mikro e.V. – explores the relationships between creative work, intellectual property law, and technology (www.iRights.info).

About the exhibition
How does the changing notion of (creative) work relate to intellectual property? Today we live in a post-industrial society where the goods being produced are no longer material (like steel, coal, etc.), but immaterial. The Ruhr Area, with its vast deindustrialised landscape, paradigmatically stands for this transition from the Industrial Age to the information or knowledge society. However, there is a significant difference: Immaterial goods such as knowledge and information can be reproduced without loss. Therefore, in order to function in a value-added chain, the distribution of these immaterial goods has to be restricted. This is effectuated with the aid of intellectual property (IP) law, namely copyrighting, patenting, and trademarking.

David Rice’s perfidious short story ‘Anna Kournikova Deleted By Memeright Trusted System’ – from which curators Inke Arns and Francis Hunger have borrowed the exhibition title – deals with the concept of intellectual property: In 2065 stars – such as ex-tennis player Anna Kournikova – have their ‘brand’ protected by a satellite-based system that identifies unlicensed look-alikes and eliminates them via a strong laser beam. During a trip to the Pacific Rim, not officially cleared, the ‘real’ Anna Kournikova is identified as an imitation of herself and is consequently eliminated by the system.

>The exhibition in the PHOENIX Halle, measuring 2,200 square metres and located on the grounds of the former steelworks Phoenix-West, puts forward the thesis that the increasingly strict application of intellectual property law hampers the development of culture as a whole. It proves increasingly difficult to impart this culture by employing images, logos, or soundbites of this very culture (for instance, sampling in hip hop, which has already been made impossible by aggressive copyright lawyers threatening any use of sampling with legal action).

Anna Kournikova Deleted By Memeright Trusted System – Kunst im Zeitalter des Geistigen Eigentums zeigt zeitgenössische künstlerische Arbeiten aus den Bereichen der Konzept-, Netz- und Softwarekunst sowie Filmwerke, die die Kollision von Technikentwicklung, digitaler Rechtekontrolle, Ökonomie und kultureller Arbeit zugleich nachdenklich und spielerisch aufzeigen.

The artists represented in this exhibition explore the question of art in the age of mechanical reproduction positioning itself differently in a post-Fordist era permeated with digital networks than in Fordist, analogue times to which Walter Benjamin has referred. Artistic techniques like cut-up, sampling, détournement, appropriation, copying, remixing, plagiarism, and repetition are employed.

Work 2.0 — Copyright and Creative Work in the Digital Age is a project by

The project Work 2.0 deals with the relation between creative work, copyright and technology. It consists of three parts: The information portal on copyright, iRights.info, researches new forms of labour relations in the most important copyright branches and runs a blog and a forum on this topic. This part of the project is developed in cooperation with AG Informatik in Bildung und Gesellschaft, Institut für Informatik der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and receives funding by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung in the framework of Innovations- und Technikanalyse. The exhibition by Hartware MedienKunstVerein provides a survey of artistic strategies dealing with the new frameworks in the areas of work and property. Finally, the symposium Creative Work and Copyright, which is sponsored by the Federal Center for Civic Education, will offer space for discussion the results of the collaborative project.

Does copyright protect the author or the exploiter? How do authors work — with public grants, in creative industries, or in happy and willing self-exploitation? Remixing is illegal yet extremely common — how can the interests of the creatives and re-creatives be reconciled? Pressing questions from the analysis of new labour conditions will be explored not only in talks and panel discussions but also in the form of performances, films, concerts, and a tour of the exhibition. The symposium is sponsored by the Federal Centre for Civic Education.

‘You can’t use it without my permission … I’m gonna sue your ass!’ shouts Disney’s Little Mermaid with the angry voice of a copyright lawyer in the video Gimme the Mermaid (4:49 min., 2000).

The video by Negativland and Tim Maloney, situated at the exhibition entrance, is only one of more than twenty works included in ‘Anna Kournikova Deleted By Memeright Trusted System: Art in the Age of Intellectual Property’, an exhibition presented by Hartware MedienKunstVerein (HMKV) It is part of Arbeit 2.0 – copyright and creative work in the digital age, one of thirteen projects in Germany funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation focusing on ‘The Future of Labour.’ In the framework of Arbeit 2.0, HMKV – together with the Berlin-based collaborative partner iRights.info/mikro e.V. – explores the relationships between creative work, intellectual property law, and technology (www.iRights.info).

So how does the changing notion of (creative) work relate to intellectual property? Today we live in a post-industrial society where the goods being produced are no longer material (like steel, coal, etc.), but immaterial. The Ruhr Area, with its vast deindustrialised landscape, paradigmatically stands for this transition from the Industrial Age to the information or knowledge society. However, there is a significant difference: Immaterial goods such as knowledge and information can be reproduced without loss. Therefore, in order to function in a value-added chain, the distribution of these immaterial goods has to be restricted. This is effectuated with the aid of intellectual property (IP) law, namely copyrighting, patenting, and trademarking.

David Rice’s perfidious short story ‘Anna Kournikova Deleted By Memeright Trusted System’ – from which curators Inke Arns and Francis Hunger have borrowed the exhibition title – deals with the concept of intellectual property: In 2065 stars – such as ex-tennis player Anna Kournikova – have their ‘brand’ protected by a satellite-based system that identifies unlicensed look-alikes and eliminates them via a strong laser beam. During a trip to the Pacific Rim, not officially cleared, the ‘real’ Anna Kournikova is identified as an imitation of herself and is consequently eliminated by the system.

The exhibition in the PHOENIX Halle, measuring 2,200 square metres and located on the grounds of the former steelworks Phoenix-West, puts forward the thesis that the increasingly strict application of intellectual property law hampers the development of culture as a whole. It proves increasingly difficult to impart this culture by employing images, logos, or soundbites of this very culture (for instance, sampling in hip hop, which has already been made impossible by aggressive copyright lawyers threatening any use of sampling with legal action).

The artists represented in this exhibition explore the question of art in the age of mechanical reproducibility positioning itself differently in a post-Fordist era permeated with digital networks than in Fordist, analogue times to which Walter Benjamin has referred. Artistic techniques like cut-up, sampling, détournement, appropriation, copying, remixing, plagiarism, and repetition are employed.
